The two carry the same information but not the same evidence. A diagram argues a process across time, frame by frame. A massing model tests the result in space, letting you check shadow, proportion and the relationship to neighbours by hand. Strong presentations use both.

The Six Moves Behind Most Massing Studies

Almost every massing study is a chain of standard operations. Six of them cover most student and office schemes, in this order, because each one narrows the field left by the previous one.

1. Start With the Zoning Envelope

The first frame is not your building. It is the maximum volume the site legally allows, extruded from the lot boundary to the height limit. Starting from the zoning envelope shows what you were given before what you did with it, and every later subtraction then reads against a ghost of that maximum.

2. Cut for Setbacks and Height Limits

Codes then shave the block back. New York does this through rules that keep a building below an inclined sky exposure plane above a set street wall height, as laid out in the city's Zoning Resolution provisions for sky exposure plane buildings. Cite your own jurisdiction's rule in the caption. A setback with a code reference reads as a constraint; the same setback without one reads as a whim.

3. Split the Volume

Splitting breaks a single slab into two or more bars to let light and movement pass through. The cut should follow something real on the site: a desire line across the block, a view corridor, or the grain of the surrounding fabric.

4. Shift and Rotate

Sliding one bar against another opens a courtyard, produces a terrace on the lower roof and turns rooms toward a better orientation. Rotation does similar work when the street grid and the solar geometry disagree. Keep the movement small enough that the pieces read as one building.

5. Carve and Subtract

Carving removes volume for atria, entrance recesses, light wells and through-block passages. Each subtraction needs a stated purpose, since a void with no reason behind it is decoration. This is also where schemes lose floor area.

6. Terrace the Top

Stepping the upper floors back gives usable roof space, reduces shadow on neighbours and often satisfies step two at once. A frame needs four things: the volume, a hint of context, an arrow showing the operation, and a caption of five to eight words naming the reason rather than the action. "Split for east west view corridor" works. "Split volume" does not.

Rotating the camera between frames breaks a massing sequence. When the viewpoint drifts, the reader compares two pictures instead of following one transformation. Set one angle, usually a 30 degree isometric or a plan oblique, and hold it for every frame including the context image.

A massing model works by leaving things out: one material, one colour, no glazing, no mullions. Chipboard is the studio default because it cuts fast, glues cleanly and reads as neutral mass. SketchUp is the quickest way to push and pull a block into shape, and its section planes make internal voids readable. Rhino handles curved and stepped forms better, and with Grasshopper you can drive setbacks, floor counts and terrace depths from parameters, then compare dozens of options in an afternoon. Sheet Layout for a Massing Sequence

Run the frames in one horizontal band across the top third of the board, sized so each volume stays legible from two metres away. Number them, keep the gaps even, and put captions below each frame on a consistent baseline rather than inside the drawing.

Give the final frame more room, since that is the volume every later drawing refers back to, and put the shadow studies directly under the band. If the massing strip and the site plan land on opposite corners, most readers will not rebuild the connection.
