A toilet CAD block is a reusable drawing symbol that represents a water closet in plan, elevation, or both, drawn at real-world size so it can be inserted straight into a bathroom layout. Good blocks carry correct fixture dimensions, a sensible insertion point, clean layers, and the clearances required by plumbing and accessibility codes.
Most people download a toilet block, drop it into a plan, and move on. That is where the trouble starts. A block that looks convincing at 1:100 can sit on the wrong layer, plot at the wrong weight, or hide the fact that the room is 4 inches too narrow to be legal. What Makes a Toilet CAD Block Usable?
A block is not a picture of a fixture. It is a small piece of drawing infrastructure, and four things decide whether it behaves.
View comes first. A plan block shows the footprint and tank outline from above; an elevation block shows the same fixture from the front or side, which you need for interior elevations, tiling layouts and grab bar heights. Files sold as bathroom CAD blocks plan elevation sets give you both views drawn to identical fixture dimensions, and mismatched pairs are a common source of coordination errors on small projects. The insertion point comes second. It belongs at the wall face on the fixture centerline, not at a corner of the bounding box, so you can snap a toilet to a wall and slide it along without recalculating anything.
Units and content hygiene finish the list. A block drawn in millimeters and inserted into an imperial drawing arrives at roughly 1/25 of its intended size, so check units before insertion. Open-library blocks also carry hatch patterns, text styles and stray layers into your file, and a block that drags 40 layers with it is a liability however good the linework is.

Standard Fixture Dimensions and Clearances
The block is the easy part. The space around it is what gets checked in plan review, and in the United States the International Plumbing Code sets the baseline geometry for any water closet.
- A water closet centerline sits no closer than 15 inches (381 mm) to any side wall, partition, vanity or other obstruction.
- Adjacent fixtures are spaced at least 30 inches (762 mm) center to center.
- There is at least 21 inches (533 mm) of clear space in front of the bowl to any wall, fixture or door.
- A standard water closet compartment is at least 30 inches wide and 60 inches deep for a floor-mounted bowl, or 56 inches deep for a wall-hung bowl.
Those figures come from IPC Section 405.3.1 in the 2021 edition. Draw them as a clearance zone on a non-plot layer around every toilet block, and the layout either works or it visibly does not.
A shower CAD block carries its own geometry, and the three ADA compartment types are not interchangeable: a transfer shower is 36 inches square, a standard roll-in shower is 60 inches wide by 30 inches deep minimum, and an alternate roll-in is 60 inches wide by 36 inches deep with a 36 inch opening. Under the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design, an accessible water closet centerline falls 16 to 18 inches from the side wall (§604.2), the clearance around it is 60 inches wide by 56 inches deep minimum (§604.3.2), and the seat sits 17 to 19 inches above the finish floor (§604.4). The Access Board recommends specifying 17 inches for the centerline so construction tolerance of up to 1 inch still lands inside the range. Layers, Scale, and Line Weight for Bathroom CAD Blocks
Fixtures are not architecture and should not plot like it. Put sanitary fixtures on their own layer, typically an A-FLOR-PFIX or A-SANR style name depending on your office standard, so they can be frozen for a furniture plan or isolated for plumbing coordination. Scale changes what a block should contain. At 1:100 a toilet is a footprint and a tank rectangle; more detail turns into a smudge on the print. At 1:20 for a bathroom elevation you want the seat, lid line, flush plate and fixture profile. One block detailed enough for both gives you an illegible plan and a thin elevation, so keep two versions and pick by drawing scale.
Fixture outlines belong in the mid range of line weight, lighter than cut walls and heavier than hatch or dimension lines, so the eye reads structure first and fittings second.
Block Placement Mistakes That Cost You a Redraw
Three failures show up repeatedly. Exploding a block to nudge one line is the most damaging, because it breaks every future global update and scatters geometry across layers. Mirroring a block to flip a bathroom is the second: mirrored text reads backwards, and mirrored geometry can put the flush plate on the wrong side of a wall-hung unit.
The quietest error is snapping to a wall centerline instead of the wall face. It looks right on screen and puts the fixture half a wall thickness out of position, enough to fail a 21 inch front clearance check.
⚠️ Common Mistake to Avoid
Downloading a manufacturer block and assuming it represents a generic fixture. Manufacturer blocks are drawn to one specific model, and rough-in distance from wall to bowl centerline varies between products, commonly 10, 12 or 14 inches. If the specified product changes late in a job, the block that was accurate becomes a dimension error. Note the model and rough-in on the block itself so the mismatch is visible.

The usual pattern is one generic library for early design, one manufacturer library once a product is specified, and a personal folder of cleaned blocks you actually trust. ARCAT
ARCAT is a long-running United States building product directory that publishes manufacturer-supplied CAD details free of charge. Its content is filed by CSI MasterFormat number, so plumbing fixtures live under Division 22 in section 22 40 00, with sub-sections separating residential fixtures, commercial water closets and urinals, and commercial lavatories and sinks.
Files download as DWG or PDF with no payment and no purchase step, and the MasterFormat structure means the same logic you use to organise a specification also finds the drawing. Because everything is manufacturer supplied, the geometry matches a real product rather than an idealised symbol.
Best for: finding a fixture detail by specification section during design development.
Watch for: the CSI numbering is unhelpful if you do not already know which division a fixture falls under, and coverage depends entirely on which manufacturers chose to publish.
CADdetails
CADdetails works on a similar model, hosting manufacturer-specific drawings in both 2D and 3D formats across residential and commercial plumbing fixture categories. Its plumbing fixtures section runs to several hundred drawings, with separate subcategories for toilets, toilets with tank, toilet compartments, and toilet and bath accessories.
The subcategory structure is the reason to go here rather than anywhere else: if you specifically need a tank-type toilet or a compartment layout rather than a bowl, you can filter straight to it. Downloads are free but you need to create an account before the files release.
Best for: a specific fixture type when you know the configuration but not the manufacturer.
Watch for: the account wall interrupts a quick search, and drawings reflect one product, so dimensions should be checked against whatever is finally specified.
BIMobject
BIMobject is the largest manufacturer catalogue in the field, founded in 2011 and based in Malmö, Sweden. Its sanitary category splits into toilets, toilet seats, toilet accessories, cisterns, urinals, bidets and wash basins, with content from manufacturers including Duravit, Laufen, Hansgrohe and TOTO.
You can filter the catalogue by software, so a Revit family, an AutoCAD file, a SketchUp model or an ArchiCAD object can be pulled from the same product page. Downloads are free and require an account. The platform is built around BIM objects first, with 2D CAD offered where the manufacturer supplied it.
Best for: product-specific content when the project runs in Revit or ArchiCAD rather than plain AutoCAD.
Watch for: discontinued products stay listed, and a 2D DWG is not guaranteed for every object, so check the format list before committing.
Archweb
Archweb is run by Archweb srl in Rome and has been publishing DWG libraries since 2004. Its sanitary blocks page carries toilets and bidets in a range of sizes and designs as a single AutoCAD file, drawn in 2D at 1:100 with meters as the drawing unit.
The library is organised by room type rather than by manufacturer, which suits early layout work where you want a plausible fixture rather than a specified one. Files are free for registered users, with a premium tier and single-purchase items alongside the free content.
Best for: quick metric layout blocks when no product has been chosen yet.
Watch for: fixture sizes follow European conventions and the drawing unit is meters, so both need converting before the blocks meet a US imperial drawing.
Studio Kohler
Studio Kohler is Kohler's own resource portal for design professionals, offering Revit, CAD, 3D and 2D files alongside technical documents for its products. Going direct to a manufacturer is the only way to be certain a block matches the fixture that will actually be installed.
Every major sanitaryware manufacturer runs an equivalent library, and the workflow is the same in each case: find the product page, open technical resources, take the file. Downloads are free. Because the files come from the manufacturer, the rough-in dimension and bowl profile can be trusted without a second check.
Best for: construction documents where the fixture schedule is already fixed.
Watch for: you need the model number before you start, and one product downloads at a time, so building a full bathroom takes several visits.
